23/09/2008 Melamine Contamination of Baby Formula Thousands of cases of poisoing have been reported in China, after melamine was added to baby formula. Several babies have died.

Melamine is of low toxicity in a one-off situation. However, if ingested over a longer period of time it can lead to kidney stones, acute kidney failure and sometimes death.

Low levels of melamine are expected as part of the food cycle. Only one product in NZ has tested with an unacceptably high melamine level (White Rabbit Lollies).
