04/03/2009 Warning Regarding Karaka Trees Auckland City Council is warning parents and pet owners about the dangers of Karaka (Corynocarpus laevigatus).

Karaka is very toxic, especially the fruit or hard kernel inside. Any ingestion can cause serious toxicity, including painful paralysis.

Karaka has been traditionally eaten by Maaori, who understood how to detoxify the fruit through a long boiling and washing process.
